My vision flickered for a moment. No matter how many times I blinked I couldn’t stop it. “Did I hit my head?”

“It’s not just you,” Gigi murmured, her hand reaching out for mine.

I grabbed on like she was a lifeline. Gravity no longer orienting me to the earth. “What’s happening?” I peered up through the trees to see Dray alone in the sky. He swooped in a circle, his wings moving him over a great distance in a matter of seconds.

Then the other dragon suddenly reappeared in front of him, screeching and breathing fire. Dray twisted away, circled around and got the drop on the mysterious invader, sinking his claws into the back of the dragon. It screeched and then vanished once and for all.

“What the hell is going on?” Leena asked. She blinked a lot like Ryddyck did. A twitch of the eyes as much as a quick closing of the lids.

The similarity tickled something in my mind. Something I couldn’t name. “Ryddyck, is your vision off too?”

He blink-twitched. “Seems a bit worse than usual.”

“It’s always like this for you, isn’t it?” Ryddyck had no memory of before. He was a prisoner. He knew things.

“I spend a lot of time in a dark room so I’m not sure if my situation matters much.” He kept his eyes on Gigi. When he wasn’t blinking to clear his vision he couldn’t stop staring at her. Like she was a combination of a miracle and the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen. The open admiration gave me secondhand embarrassment.

“But it does, doesn’t it? Even in the dark, your vision flickers like ours is now.”

He twisted his head side to side. “Maybe.”

“Is it because of the ghosts? The Grista? This lock and the door you keep talking about?” If the things happening here at the House of Axl had twisted and ripped the fabric, like he said, then maybe it was doing something to our vision too. Something to do with the glimmer of black I saw on the Plane.

When I pulled on my tether the Plane was different now. The eerie blue was more muted and the black shimmer now covered everything. It felt like a blanket was wrapped tight around me and I couldn’t get my arms free.

Ryddyck’s face contorted as he searched for a way to explain that we would understand. He gave up and shrugged. That’s when Iwan stepped forward. “He showed me. I might be able to explain some of it. This place has become unstable. Metaphysically speaking. The walls between our physical existence and another are disintegrating, basically.”

Ryddyck nodded quickly. “Yes. The Grista are not ghosts. They are the shadows you see now through the wall.”

“But what are they? Samhain? Human?” Gigi whispered.

“No, no, no. They are not you in a different place. They are them. They’re…me. I am them.” He frowned in confusion.

“But you’re here,” Gigi said, mirroring his frown.

“Yes. I had to come for you because you are the key to the lock in the door.
